The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says the key is to avoid overdoing any single sport while giving growing bodies enough rest between practices and games.
Some tips from the specialists include:
- Limit the number of teams your child joins in one season. Kids who play on more than one team are especially at risk for overuse injuries.
- Avoid year-round sports: they use the same muscle groups over and over again. Playing multiple sports helps prevent injuries and develops essential skills.
